Comfort, Comfort

by The Rev. Dr. Ginger Brasher-Cunningham on May 01, 2020

Comfort tea, a book, a movie, favorite blanket, pup or cat at your feet, chocolate, water-view, window view of family/friends, unexpected call or card, journaling/creating, or a physical distancing walk with a friend . . . Comfort - how do we find it right now? A prayer of longing or lament, prayers of gratitude or celebration, and just utterances in our prayers are woven through all the ways we experience comfort. May these Bible verses add comfort to these days-

Isaiah 40: 28, 31 “They who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”

Isaiah 49:13 “Sing for joy, O heavens, and exult, O earth; break forth, O mountains, into singing! For God has comforted God’s people and will have compassion on the afflicted.”

Romans 8:35, 37 “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”

Matthew 5:35 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”

Lamentations 3:2223 “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, holy mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is God’s faithfulness.”

Psalm 23:4 “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

Isaiah 66:13 “As one whom a loving mother comforts, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.”

Psalm 31:7 “I will rejoice and be glad in Your steadfast love God, because You have seen my affliction; You have known the distress of my soul.”

Romans 8:3839 “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Nothing, dear ones, nothing can ever separate us from the love of God. May we feel God’s love and the love of the wider community of Christ as the Spirit of hope continues to move in and about and around us all!
Peace, Ginger
