First Church Reads: Begin Again James Baldwin's America and Its Urgent Lessons for Our Own

"First Church Reads" is a new feature section of the Steeple where staff members or members of the church may be invited to offer book and formation recommendations that specifically help deepen spiritual life. This week we have a recommendation from Chuck Ramsey.

Eddie Glaude Jr. a professor of African-American Studies at Princeton has just published "Begin Again: James Baldwin's America and Its Urgent Lessons for Our Own".  Written in a comfortable style that combines a biography of James Baldwin and the extensive connections he had to all the major Civil Rights figures from the '60's until today Glaude "connects the dots" of Black America's attempt for racial equality.  He uses many of Baldwin's books essays and interviews to describe what Walt Whitman referred to as "after times" to describe America following the Civil War.  While I was uncomfortable revisiting the sixties and remembering all the racial strife that has taken place from then until today I found that it to be the best written book that I have read this year and I strongly recommend it for its historical perspective and contemporary analysis of our racial inequality.
